Blocked Drain

Is your kitchen sink plugged up or blocked?

All plumbing systems develop clogs. There is simply no way to avoid it!

If a kitchen drain is clogged and water flow is backed up, it's typically the result of junk, trash and food build-up clogged up in one of the pipes.

However, most stopped up sinks and drains can be fixed without calling in a plumber. First Remove any clogs that are visible in the drain and put a bucket underneath the leak to catch any drips.

How to Remove a SINK-DRAIN Blockage

First: Try a plunger to remove the blockage. If the plunger does not work, you may have to snake it.

Next: Buy a snake (also known as a drain cleaning auger).

It's easier to remove gunk from the drain pipe rather than from the sink. An inexpensive manual snake will do the trick. Typical sizes are 15-50 inches long, and 25 inches is usually more than enough.

You can find any tools and equipment that you need at any home hardware store, including B&Q, Homebase, Wickes, or a local independent store. Keep receipts for reimbursement.

How to use a Snake: Remove the trap and insert the snake into the drain pipe and when you meet resistance, rotate the snake clockwise. Be prepared: the snake may be covered in the most vile, black, smelly sewer line sludge, so do not give it the opportunity to whip around when taken out of the pipe.

Here are some Useful Tips:

Try baking soda and vinegar to unclog a clogged drain. This option is inexpensive, using everyday household items. If the problem persists, try clearing the clog with the above suggestions. Read the recipe:

Try One Shot drain cleaner. It’s slightly more expensive, but works really well for stubborn drain blockages.

Be cautious using chemical drain cleaners that are heavily advertised as brand name household items. You may be tempted to pour them down a clogged drain before trying anything else, but this may not be the best strategy. Chemical drain cleaners can erode pipes and create a bigger problem. Use the alternatives listed above for a more effective result that is less risky to your health and the environment.

Avoid the dreaded clogged drain. Use a drain screen. Avoid putting chemicals down the drain. Clean your sink stoppers. Pour boiling water down the drain. Do not let small items fall through to the drain pipes. Clear hair from drain after use.

Does your drain smell? Clean out any clogs and pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain to stop the odour.

If you can not clear a clog after a few attempts, report a description of the problem by filling in a maintenance form.

Please note: The cost of a callout and to fix the problem will not be covered by Arrive Homes, the owner or agent, or insurance if the blockage is found to be caused by tenants.
