Mold & Mildew

Mold and mildew can grow anywhere and wherever water, cooling or warming temperatures, and moisture exist, and are commonplace in shared living spaces.

How Do I Get Rid of Mold?

A common living space can be an ideal place for mold and mildew to grow. Here are some simple tips to keep control over any mold growth, big or small:

Keep room temperatures within 65 to 70F and the relative humidity within 45%-65% to prevent moisture and dampness. Killing the mold at its source is the only safe and effective way to get rid of it.

Keep the room properly ventilated. Leave doors, closets and curtains open. Keep windows open when possible.

Spray Mold & Mildew Remover. Make sure that when you purchase the product it does what it says: removes mold. Buy the product, and simply follow the instructions on the product.

Mold growth can be reduced by cleaning window frames, books, leather products, and wood paneling, and by keeping damp clothing and shoes out of closets.

Bedroom surfaces where moisture can build should be washed with a mold-preventing or mold-killing solution once or twice a week and the room be properly ventilated to eliminate dampness and prevent mold from growing or reappearing.

Here are some Useful Tips:

Clean mold on wet surfaces. Spray the mold first with cleaning agent before scrubbing. This will keep spores from becoming airborne whilst cleaning the surface.

Hang clothing. Leaving wet clothes laying around a bedroom makes perfect conditions for moisture to be trapped and mold to grow and spread.

Keep doors open to help ventilation in the room.

Clean blinds often with a duster and disinfectant, and draw curtains during the day. Curtains and Blinds can trap moisture and cause mold to grow, especially curtains of a heavy material.

Keep the room well lit. Mold thrives in dark spaces.

Do not shelve books or place furniture directly against an outside wall. Due to temperature and humidity differences between inside and outside environments, moisture may develop along walls. Allowing air to circulate against the walls will enable the moisture to evaporate.

Spray & Scrub using Bleach. How much bleach, detergent and water do I use? Mix one part detergent, five parts bleach and twenty parts warm water. Make it 10 parts bleach for a stronger solution. After you have made your cleaning agent, simply:

  • Spray the ready-made bleach solution over the mold. Let it sit.
  • Scrub the area until clean. Wipe the area with paper towel. Allow to dry.
  • Repeat if necessary.

  • Damp patches may result from or be the cause of a mold problem. Find the information you need to report the issue under Common Space Living Damp&Leaks.

If the mold is extreme and uncontrollable, and/or there is evidence of deterioration due to the mold, report a description immediately by filling in a maintenance form.
